Many thanks to SuppaiNoRingo who has done a superb cleaning job and Gernot of course for his super accurate and awesome translation.

Update:

Gernot has made two minor changes to pages 18 and 22 and notified me about it (Page 18: She's once cut off---> She once cut off.
Page 22: the every --> every):

    1. 1) You can easily erase these footnotes even by using paint and white brush.

      2) I don't see how they could hinder reading since they're small and outside of frames.

      3) They are there so that I would know exactly which fragments of translation have become less literal and so that I wouldn't have to go to gernot's translation page for this. This helps for example when translating it into Polish, Spanish or Italian. And they're not "retarded", it's just an alternative to the translation you see in the bubble and gives a better understanding what certain kanjis mean (so sometimes they do not make much sense but for hardcore Claymore fan they are a nice addition).

For example, the first annotation shows that Chronos didn't have only warriors in mind but also Raki (why would he exclude him? It just looks better in English to write warriors rather than "those present at that place"). The second one that Chronos tells Lars to dodge to the best of his abilities and be prepared. The third that Chronos made a mistake and missed that there was another being (but that's an interpretation of his words which anyone could conclude himself but Gernot has made it clear enough so that even retards would know what it meant), etc. etc. These are details but for some quite important details. I for one like to discuss each chapter extensively and these footnotes help me to do so and I can be sure that when I'm analysing a certain scene there is no room for other interpretation.

  4. Well if those are only meants for other translators then maybe id give it a rest tho most of them are completely unnnecessary unless theres some gimmick in how its written in japanese oh well but theres this one thats just plain wrong : When I think its Deneve says 'A struggle for that body' you wrote that it means a struggle with flesh and blood at stake but they literally fight over a body there you cant say it more literally theyre simply fighting over the superior body that was created calling it a struggle with flesh and blood at stake is just incomprehensible for me... I dont wanna be rude or anything kudos for what you doing and all but thats just plain odd and hurts my eyes =p and i cant simply avoid reading it when i know its there :P

    1. I'll take it into consideration but so far you're the only one who is annoyed by that (that I know of).

    2. Hes not the only one. I was complaining about unnecessary footnotes in previous chapter comments. I know we both "Anonymous" but we are different people :)

Thanks for a new chapter guys!

    3. The problem is that if I would remove them other people wouldn't appreciate that. It's impossible to make everyone happy :). And it's much easier (and quicker) to erase them than to add them. I'm serious when I say that you can use paint for that (either white brush or an eraser).

  5. Actually I rather appreciate these notes. One of the biggest pains I always have when reading translated works is the possible inaccuracy of the translation. At least here it's visible that Gernot tries his hardest to keep it accurate. And, like Goral said, they're small and outside panels, not obnoxious notes that ruin the art.
Oh well. Just my coin on it.

  6. Thank for the chapter. I do wonder why you make all those comments about the literal translation. It's basically just reiterating what was put in the bubble and is unnecessary. It's just more work on your end, but do whatever way appeals to you. I'm just glad you know proper spelling and grammar lol. Thanks again :)

    1. Oh, just read the other comments. I see why they're there now. I don't find them annoying like the other guy, just odd. Now I know. I guess insignificant notes like that doesn't bother me as much as it does some people lol. His bit about the flesh and blood part makes my head spin. Like I said before, it's basically the same thing reiterated. Don't understand the problem :\

  8. Replied on Batoto and I'll do so here as well.

I feel like you may have misunderstood my comment.

First off, I'd like to say that I didn't intend for my comment to be a personal slight toward the scanlator's work. I appreciate the thorough effort, it just seemed to me that in this chapter the translation notes got out of hand. It just seemed excessive at times. I understand that the notes provide more information, but when the literal translation provides the most information without making it awkward, why change it? Why change "dodge well" to simply "dodge" and then provide a note when the original was more informative? Why change "mistaken it" to "missed it" and then inform us of this change when the meaning is essentially the same thing? "It doesn't change the fact that it'll be hell" means the same thing as "it'll still be hell." This is what I mean by excessive.

Just use the literal. I simply feel that the literal should be used at all times unless it is just so awkward that a translation note informing of a significant change in language is totally necessary. When you're changing "dodge well" to "dodge," the translation note is just distracting when you could have included the literal to begin with and it wouldn't have harmed the flow at all. There were notes for times when the literal meaning WAS awkward, and I do appreciate those notes. But I think you should be more selective and look at whether the literal meaning flows fine in English, and if it does, keep it and avoid unnecessary notes.

    1. No problem, I appreciate constructive criticism. It's just that because of my points #1 and #2 I don't see much of a problem. Personally I prefer the version with footnotes although I admit that some pages could go without them. But for the reasons mentioned in my point #3 I'm still leaning to leave them.

I've always been annoyed when after reading Shrimpy's or Cnet's translations I've found out that literal translation was something entirely else which messed up some discussion I had. Now in this case, you would be surprised how much these nuances can change the reasoning when micro-analysing things. As I said, for casual readers they won't be necessary but I don't see how they could hinder reading, but for hardcore Claymore fans (who do not know Japanese) they do make a difference. Indeed, professional publishers would never do something like this because they assume just that (and it's more work for them) but they are the ones who treat their readers like kids who can't even focus on reading the bubbles and not be easily distracted, not me.

I guess I could be more selective next time, although it's very rare for Gernot to make so many footnotes in one translation of a chapter.

  9. Thanks MiB and Gernot for the chapter! You guys are the greatest for working on Claymore, spending times cleaning, editting, and translating unpaid.

I honestly don't understand why people (the anonymous people from above) complain about the footnotes, when they don't get in the way of reading at all. If those people dislikes the footnotes so much, they can wait for Viz translation and buy them!

Once again, thanks for your hard work, MiB and Gernot!

    1. Not yet. I figured that these changes are so small that it can wait till morning (now from where I'm standing). I'll update them in a couple of minutes.

    2. OK, links have been updated but only Gamefront and Tishare. These changes are too minor to delete the chapter from Batoto and swap it with the new version. That's why I've posted these two particular pages above. And pages without footnotes are also optional.

  13. The footnotes don't bother me at all since they're not ruining the page by covering up scenes like other scanlators do with watermarks, they don't ruin the experience of the manga in any way so it shouldn't hurt anyone. But for the people who are interested in reading them I guess it may give a better understanding of a situation in the manga. I mean Japanese is a S-O-V language while English is a S-V-O language so certain things won't translate easily I assume, although I don't know any Japanese, which is why I all the more welcome the footnotes I guess as long the page isn't clogged up with them all over the place.

  15. I can't believe people are complaining about footnotes...

  16. Im the first anon to post about the footnotes and I'm not complaining about them they just seem very odd to me .. While I understand that theyre supposed to be for some kind of reverse translation or to see what exactly was there in japanese literal translation is not always accurate obviously ... however for a casual reader there's just ( in my opinion atleast ) too much of them o_O Maybe try to limit those footnotes a bit and try to make them for something thats really hard to understand / translate or I dont know how you do it precisely... Its just this is the first time I've seen such uhm odd footnotes in manga scans and some will agree with me I guess. Anyway not like Im gonna stop reading cause of your footnotes or anything if YOU really want/need them there who am i to object its your choice I just wanted to voice my opinion about it.
