While I understand that theyre supposed to be for some kind of reverse translation or to see what exactly was there in japanese literal translation is not always accurate obviously ... however for a casual reader there's just ( in my opinion atleast ) too much of them o_O Maybe try to limit those footnotes a bit and try to make them for something thats really hard to understand / translate or I dont know how you do it precisely... Its just this is the first time I've seen such uhm odd footnotes in manga scans and some will agree with me I guess. Anyway not like Im gonna stop reading cause of your footnotes or anything if YOU really want/need them there who am i to object its your choice I just wanted to voice my opinion about it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-79390722256205281352012-09-10T04:23:44.567+02:002012-09-10T04:23:44.567+02:00I can't believe people are complaining about f...I can't believe people are complaining about footnotes...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-48974447734331331652012-09-09T09:32:30.550+02:002012-09-09T09:32:30.550+02:00Thanks a lot ^_^Thanks a lot ^_^bunshichihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03271099123194026295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-40371167631502021632012-09-08T23:30:47.415+02:002012-09-08T23:30:47.415+02:00Thank you very much guys...Thank you very much guys...narengokunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-26451600520765695462012-09-08T14:35:18.048+02:002012-09-08T14:35:18.048+02:00The footnotes don't bother me at all since the...The footnotes don't bother me at all since they're not ruining the page by covering up scenes like other scanlators do with watermarks, they don't ruin the experience of the manga in any way so it shouldn't hurt anyone. But for the people who are interested in reading them I guess it may give a better understanding of a situation in the manga. I mean Japanese is a S-O-V language while English is a S-V-O language so certain things won't translate easily I assume, although I don't know any Japanese, which is why I all the more welcome the footnotes I guess as long the page isn't clogged up with them all over the place.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-50642571652055913712012-09-08T13:01:47.227+02:002012-09-08T13:01:47.227+02:00Thank you for the chapter. I...No problem, I appreciate constructive criticism. It's just that because of my points #1 and #2 I don't see much of a problem. Personally I prefer the version with footnotes although I admit that some pages could go without them. But for the reasons mentioned in my point #3 I'm still leaning to leave them.

I've always been annoyed when after reading Shrimpy's or Cnet's translations I've found out that literal translation was something entirely else which messed up some discussion I had. Now in this case, you would be surprised how much these nuances can change the reasoning when micro-analysing things. As I said, for casual readers they won't be necessary but I don't see how they could hinder reading, but for hardcore Claymore fans (who do not know Japanese) they do make a difference. Indeed, professional publishers would never do something like this because they assume just that (and it's more work for them) but they are the ones who treat their readers like kids who can't even focus on reading the bubbles and not be easily distracted, not me.

I guess I could be more selective next time, although it's very rare for Gernot to make so many footnotes in one translation of a chapter. I appreciate the thorough effort, it just seemed to me that in this chapter the translation notes got out of hand. It just seemed excessive at times. I understand that the notes provide more information, but when the literal translation provides the most information without making it awkward, why change it? Why change "dodge well" to simply "dodge" and then provide a note when the original was more informative? Why change "mistaken it" to "missed it" and then inform us of this change when the meaning is essentially the same thing? "It doesn't change the fact that it'll be hell" means the same thing as "it'll still be hell." This is what I mean by excessive.

Just use the literal. I simply feel that the literal should be used at all times unless it is just so awkward that a translation note informing of a significant change in language is totally necessary. When you're changing "dodge well" to "dodge," the translation note is just distracting when you could have included the literal to begin with and it wouldn't have harmed the flow at all. There were notes for times when the literal meaning WAS awkward, and I do appreciate those notes. But I think you should be more selective and look at whether the literal meaning flows fine in English, and if it does, keep it and avoid unnecessary notes.WaffleStatusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3251796164090544761.post-21488605502281801822012-09-07T18:06:02.209+02:002012-09-07T18:06:02.209+02:00And removed it since cheating it is too easy.
